Description
Secondary manifestations of volcanism offer bathing in thermal waters of recognized therapeutic properties, drinking carbonated mineral waters and using mud as peloids (also used traditionally by locals). To mention the most important thermal waters: Termas das Furnas (existing since the seventeenth century, on São Miguel Island) and Termas da Ferraria (opened in the middle of the twentieth century, also on São Miguel Island), Termas do Carapacho (Graciosa Island, located in a nineteenth century building) and Termas do Varadouro (Faial Island, opened in the mid-twentieth century but nowadays closed to the public).
